Cloud Migration
Penntech transitioned to a cloud-first infrastructure model, significantly improving scalability, performance and costs.
The problem faced
Fathom Consulting relied on an on-premise server infrastructure that no longer met its growing business’s performance and scalability needs.
Key applications such as Sage, eViews, and file-sharing services were becoming increasingly difficult to manage and maintain.
The existing servers presented reliability, speed, and secure remote access challenges.
As a result, Fathom Consulting needed a strategic overhaul: either upgrade their outdated on-premise hardware or move to a more flexible, scalable, cloud-based environment that would streamline workflow and maintenance.
Solution
After evaluating the options, Fathom Consulting proceeded with a cloud migration strategy. The approach included:
- Hybrid Setup for Licences and Printing: A small on-site machine was installed to maintain critical software licenses and to run the Microsoft Cloud Printing agent, ensuring internal resources remained easily accessible without performance bottlenecks.
- Cloud-based Sage Migration: The Sage application was fully migrated to a secure cloud environment, improving accessibility, uptime, and data management capabilities.
- File Data to SharePoint Online: All file data was transferred into SharePoint Online to enhance collaboration, version control, and document accessibility.
- Active Directory Modernization: ADConnect was configured to synchronise users and computers, seamlessly migrating from the traditional on-premise domain controller to AzureAD and Microsoft 365.
- Network Security & Authentication: The firewall was upgraded to leverage AzureAD’s SAML connection, enabling more secure and user-friendly VPN authentication.
- A new backup solution which would integrate with Microsoft 365 instead of an on-prem infrastructure
The outcome
The transition to a cloud-first infrastructure significantly improved scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
By centralising data and applications in the cloud, Fathom Consulting gained greater operational flexibility and simplified user management.
Collaboration and remote work were streamlined through SharePoint Online and AzureAD-driven authentication.
The modernised setup also reduced system downtime, improved data security, and enhanced disaster recovery capabilities.
As a result, Fathom Consulting now operates a more agile, efficient, and future-ready IT environment aligned with their evolving business requirements.
